A Revenant, Zombie, Cyborg, or formally Metabolically Extended Citizen is a class of human being in the Millennial Kingdom existing alongside the Glorified and the Naturals. Revenants are unbelievers who "died of unbelief" at age 100, but were then immediately reanimated through technological means.
Revenants are considered by believers to be equivalent to those during the Tribulation who accepted the Mark of the Beast, and thus beyond salvation; they retain the longevity afforded to Naturals in the Millennial Kingdom, but must pay for maintenance of their mechanical and electronic parts in order to keep functioning. In the Left Beyond continuity, trauma or continued tissue damage may force inserting the remaining organs of the revenant into a robotic frame.
Early experiments in revenancy result in little more than biological robots capable of following simple commands; as the Millennium unfolds, technology improves until by the last decade years of the Millennium the revivification procedure is performed routinely by doctors.
Even late-Millennium Revenants often lose some of their emotional vivacity to the procedure, tending to do nothing unless called upon, with only a mild curiosity prompting them to take independent action; they are no longer motivated by pleasure or pain. However, they are still able to feel emotion if confronted with a strong reason to do so; by the end of the Millennium, psychological therapy exists to help Revenants regain most, but not all, of their emotional intelligence.
In stories where this technology is used, "Cyborg" comes to mean somebody who has experienced death and was brought back technologically, rather than simply someone who has suffered the loss of a limb or organ and had to have it replaced by a mechanical device.
A revenant's soul is said to be "suspended above Hell by gossamer strands of nitinol and copper", and all revenants left on Earth would still go into the Lake of Fire after the White Throne Judgement; revenants who die a second time and are too damaged to be brought back would go to Hell.
Revenants enlisted in the Legion of Light are known as MEC troopers.
Brainwashed revenants raised en masse by The Only Light for the Last Battle are known as the Relentless.
